Very few people actually know that Sandra Kane Karwel was instrumental in the formulation of this statue. Back in 2010 Sandra was running for Palm Bay City Council, and was supporting the arts, as she is an artist herself. She had created a Palm Bay branch of  "ART IN PUBLIC PLACES." Sandra had assembled a medium size group of artist from across Brevard County to join together as an organization to showcase their individual artwork in public places like libraries and county buildings. The group was becoming successful, enjoying a lovely time together as they met at a local complex at a poolside patio. Sandra had arranged for the many artists to showcase their works at the Hispanic Business Expo arranged by Sam Lopez.

All the artist agreed happily to set up their art at the Expo, then two days before the Expo each of the artist received a telephone call from someone from Palm Bay. The caller relayed to the artists a fearful threat that if they attended the Business Expo harm would come to them.

Consequently, all the artist were in such real and imminent fear they immediately backed-out of the Expo. In fact, the artists were in such terror they wanted their likeness off the advertisement publications.  All the artist backed out, except one, his name is Rafael Picon Artist.

Rafael Picon said he moved to the United States from Spain. He prided himself in the fundamental concept of personal freedom. He would not be bullied or threatened by an unknown caller threatening him to freely travel and exhibit his artwork at the Business Expo.  He told Sandra Kane Karwel he would not succumb to being threatened, and he would exhibit his artwork at the Business Expo.

Rafael Picon did attend the Expo. He had the most inventive, creative, and exceptionally grand display.  It was almost like a magically wonderland of creativity. He was proclaimed the best exhibitor at the Expo, and everyone loved him.

At the Business Expo Rafael met Sam Lopez and they became friends automatically.  Eventually, the two dreamed of a statue for the Ponce de Leon  1513 - 2013 Festival.  Rafael Picon is an exceptionally and amazingly talented bronze scupturer.

The dream of a statue became a reality. The statue was completed as the picture shows, and is proudly displayed in Melbourne Beach.

STEVE SHYTLE of the Palm Bay Police did criminal HOME INVASION by ramming Sandra Kane Karwel's front door to her warranty deed home of 48 years.  Then Shytle stole everything of value from inside her home, and filled-up realtor Robert Lemke’s car with Sandra’s private property. These retaliations against the Karwel family can be traced back to an event in 2007, when Sandra Kane Karwel did discover the City of Palm Bay's involvement in a Insurance Fraud scheme that defrauded Sandra's 82 year old mother Evelyn Jane Karwel out of nearly $72,000.00 dollars.
